Overall today's lesson that was appealing to me was about building the relationship between me (as the PR) and the journalists.
If we are good at making friends, I think this building relationship thingy is just a piece of cake for you, am I right?
I mean, building a relationship based on trust, on positive experiences on both sides, etc, I am sure these are the basic things that everyone should have in the beginning, right? Not only do PR people need that, I bet all the business people need that as well.
If one company wish to collaborate with another company, the basic thing that they are looking for are trust and positive experiences.
Moving on to the next thing that I would like to say is that to be a successful PR, we should have a perfect strategy and tactics afterall.
Spoken tactics, acted tactics and imagined tactics.
okay, lets say if I were the PR and I am supposed to hand in a plan for the grand opening restaurant.
The first thing that I should consider in doing are finding who are my target audiences, my objectives, my goals, my strategies and also my tactics.
After I know who my target audiences are, my goals and objectives are then only I could carry on to the next thing.
I could proceed on to sending out the press release and media alerts 3 weeks before the restaurant's grand opening, including the venue and opening time details as my first step.
Looking for the sponsorships.
Having the media and photographers on hand for the photos taking.
Creating an attractive website with all the available menu.
Team up with the other local event for more food public relations.
Become a news source to capitalize on the restaurant PR plan. Invite food editors to the restaurant; offer ideas for their columns. Let local radio and TV stations and trade associations know the chef or owner is the go-to PR person for stories on food pairings and party preparation.Work with other business owners to combine resources for an ongoing public relations plan (the restaurant hangs a gallery's art; the gallery has restaurant menus available.). Inviting the food editors to the restaurant; offer ideas for their columns.
Let local radio and TV stations and trade associations report on the restaurant. etc.
You could do anything as long as it could attract more people to realize the existence of your client's product.
PR people should keep promoting and developing their own creativity to succeed.
That is what I think I have learned for today. Thank you.

THEORY AND PRACTICE ON THE JOB.
Research is an important tool for public relations practitioners. (SYnnott&Chia, 2009).
In fact, almost every subject that we learn needs research as the basic tool.
Research can assist us as it provides information that helps to plan, implement and evaluate.
Being the public relations practitioners, we have got to master this basic tool as we are going to need it in every single task that we encounter to.
Lets say we were the public relations and we need to assist xxx organization in its PR industry, but then we never even done a single research on the product that we are going to launch on, how do you think we are going to promote it to the journalists?
Just based on our knowledge? guess? make assumptions? forget about the details?
Research will definitely have a great help for public relations practitioners in doing their task.
It enables the public relations practitioners to create programs based on better understanding of issues and with a better appreciation of context, which in turn gives us confidence in the recommended communication solution.
Wilcox et al. (2006: 153) liken planning to putting together a jigsaw puzzle, with research providing the clues about where to place the individual pieces.
The practitioners will constantly ask questions in their quest to fully get the idea of the problems, issues, or opportunity before they start to develop strategies to deal with the situation.
Research is simply a process whereby we are to gather the information that will provide the basis to establish an understanding of situations and issues and make sense of them.
There is always a way where we can complete our task perfectly, so serve your clients well by doing the research well as your basic weapon.

PUBLIC RELATIONS ETHIC
What is ethic to you??
And is that really important to public relations?
To me ethics is the principles of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group; as, the Puritan ethic.Yet, to Chia and Synnott 2009 ethics is about standards of behavior, specifically, concern for good behavior and consideration of how our behavior, as an individual or an organization, affects the wellbeing of others or society as a whole.
Ethics involves morals and values.
If we are making an effort to behave ethically, we will consider the morals and values involved in our actions before we act.
Even we know most of the public relations people are good people, but only with good does not guarantee them to have an ethical outcome.
Ethics has to be brought up, its not necessarily natural.
To be a perfect public relations practitioner, the basic thing that you have to have is ethics.
You've got to behave in an ethical way when communicating with your clients to have them have a good impression on you and want to work with you.
PR ethics that every public relations have to own are;
HONESTY, ACCURACY, INTEGRITY and TRUTH.
It used to be the job of public relations professionals to fix PR disasters.
Okay ..
So overall, learning P.R is all about creating an amazing tactics and strategy to complete one task?
Emm~ quite makes sense ..
If a PR has no enough knowledge about the task that they are doing, they will not be able to complete it.
TODAY headlines : Do Enough Research to Develop Strategies and Tactics.
Besides, the idea of the fact that competitors are not necessarily immediately obvious, is just so true and I do agree ..
Let's just say a newspaper company, I believe that their competitors are not solely the other newspaper company, but also their readers. The readers themselves are the one who decide if they are still willing to buy or subscribe the particular newspaper or just read it online or even listen the news from the radio, etc.
The competitors are everywhere and anything, so please do aware of them! *winkwink
Be a great PR by serving your clients well ..

WEEK 2
THEORETICAL CONTEXTS.
Richard Amos has his opinion about theoretical contexts, "you do not know what you have got until you enter the workforce and are forced to apply your theoretical learning in a practical workplace setting. The moment of truth comes when you realize that what you do or say in this world actually counts for something. Professional ability starts with education. It certainty does not start when you get a job."
In practical terms, not only does the practice is important, the theory is even more essential. Why is that??
It is because if you want to be a great practitioner, you have to have enough basic which is the theories that you have learned through books, researches etc to guide you when practicing.
Beyond its practically, understanding theory will challenge you to think more deeply about what and where your assumptions about public relations come from (Chia&Synnott, 2009).
While theories are used as a guide to practice, theories need, by and large, to be tested and retested, questioned and challenged (Chia&Synnott, 2009).
In the step 2 of systems theories which is the communication theories, I like the idea of persuasion.
Chia&Synnott, 2009 mentioned that actually persuasion as an unethical practice within public relations.
But then, after getting through much critique of Grunig's initial assertion, persuasion has now been included in the excellence theory as an element of dialogue (Botan&Hazleton, 2006:10).
So in persuading drivers to keep to the speed limit or not to drink and drive, the communication messages are not manipulative but protective of the drivers, their passengers, and the community at large (Chia&Synnott, 2009 pp 65).
I personally agree to the idea of persuading as we need to skill to talk and persuade to succeed in becoming the public relations.
To me it is one of the most effective ways of becoming a good PR practitioners.
Being the beginners, when you still do not have much experiences, even its a bit difficult, but as long as you have the skill to persuade and talk, you'll get through it.
Introduction to Public Relations ... ?!??
What do you have in mind about learning Public Relations subject?
Anyway, today is my first day learning and engaging with this particular subject, Public Relations and frankly said I am now looking forward to knowing what exactly is all about, as I would always want to be one of the successful public relations one day.
Yet, to be honest, I have never really understood what public relations all about until today I finally have a little pictures of it.
"PR is a process by which organisation communicate with public in different ways in different situations.." this is what I got today.
Reading book today :
Week 1&2
UNDERSTANDING TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY PUBLIC RELATIONS.
TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS.
I second the idea of PRIA, Tracy Jones that saying the new public relations graduates are to work with people they admire and 'learn, learn, learn'.
To work with people you admire will assist you faster to succeed as you admire the people, you love the job, you love the surroundings, when you have already gotten all the basic stuff, it will be easier for you to be the best public relations.
A lot of people especially the new practitioners of PR still do not know what is the real meaning of their job.
Understanding the profession and having a working knowledge of what it does is very important to prevent you from misinterpreting it. So watch out!
They always think of promoting when it comes to PR.
Frankly speaking, that was my definition before I got to learn the subject, but then I just knew the real meaning after reading it for few pages.
Even promoting is a little part of it though, but the most important part is you engage with other things as well, such as planning, research, publicity, promotion and collaborative decision making to help any organisation's to achieve its mission and vision.
However, different country has differ perspective towards the definition of PR. The one that I mentioned above is US perspective because I second that very much.
United Kingdom has its own perspective, Asian, so do the authors.
Yet to me still the most incredible thing is, you can assist people with your creative idea, you bring up one organisations reputation with your creative idea, you help people to succeed and so do yourself.
what a amazing thing to do, isn't it?
Besides the facts above, do you know that apparently in PR profession, women taking the lead?
One of the trends apparent in many cultures is that public relations students and practitioners are primarily female (Chia&Synnott, 2009).
About 80% of students in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Hongkong are female while in the United Kingdom the proportion reaches 90% instead in recent development (L'Etang 2006: 162).
Even though in the past 60 years, the representation of women n the public relations profession was not that much, but after getting through much improvements, number of women in the public relations profession has steeply increased since then.
Wilcox et al. (65) emphasize the following:
- Women find the communication environment more welcoming than, for example, newspaper or other media work. It is true, women love to chatter away, they can even chat for the whole night with their girlfriends.
- Women make more money in public relations than comparable female-dominated fields such as teaching.
- Women can begin a public relations consultancy without a great deal of capital.
- Women tend to be more proficient listeners and communicators than men. As women are used to talking and chattering, so they tend to be good at listening and communicating. To me it is a natural thing.
- Women are more sensitive in managing dialogue and consultations. That is why most of consultations teacher are also female as well, because they know and understand how to manage a problem in a way more effective. They tend to be more sensitive, so they can understand people's feeling easily.
Last but not least, PR does seem fascinating yet ... a little bit tough I think.
